57 Channels and Nothing On….

What’s your favorite TV show? And don’t give me some knee-jerk reaction based on what’s cool or hip or whatever you are watching right now. I want a deep and honest answer. Now you might be asking “What makes a favorite?” Is it based on most watchable? The one you’ve seen the most times? The one you own the most seasons of? Maybe favorite is defined as the show you can’t wait to watch? Good questions, class. Well done. Also, no chewing gum and take off that hat, young man. Personally I think your “favorite” show changes over time – what is a favorite right now might be totally different in 3 months. I’ve had lots of favorite TV shows and sometimes I even circle back around to ones that have graced the list before.

I’ll wager most of you said Firefly or Dr. Who without even finishing the first paragraph. Why? Because if you are reading this you are a geek. Also because they are iconic I suppose; Firefly is the much loved short-season sci-fi western that everyone wants back on the air and Dr. Who is a show older than I am but recently redone in great ways. I love Firefly. I own every episode and have watched them all dozens of times, but I can’t honestly say it is my favorite (right now). I’ve seen exactly one episode of the new Dr. Who – Season 3′s Blink – and it was great. I don’t quite see the fascination yet but at some point I will get around to watching the rest of the seasons.

I don’t watch actual TV because I don’t have cable and I couldn’t make the digital receiver box work to get local TV so I have Hulu and Netflix. When Hulu pops up with new episodes of my most-watched shows, I always watch Community first – no matter what. I usually watch American Dad after that unless there is a new Castle and then it comes down to how much free time I have. I usually go with Family Guy, Grey’s Anatomy, and 30 Rock. I rather enjoy Cops too and I don’t care what you think about that. The Office is in my Hulu lineup but watching it makes me twitchy sometimes so a lot of times I’ll get 5-10 minutes in and just switch it off. Glee isn’t in my queue but I’ll load up the new episodes and fast-forward to the singing parts if it is a song I like. I really wanted to love Terra Nova but much like Lost, I lost interest once the sub plots outnumbered the cast of characters. Fringe is good but Season 3 isn’t as gripping as Season 2. Sanctuary was also good and then they had a musical episode and in my humble opinion jumped the shark.

My favorite show right now is Community. It’s funny, it’s quirky, the characters are deep enough to care about and the plots are silly enough to not get boring. I’m re-watching the whole run and I’m digging into Season 2 right now. I just love everything about the show.

I told you mine – now tell me yours!

Weekend media

Hi all,

Rather than submit links as I find them, I thought I’d put together a weekly summary of cool, geeky, weird, thought-provoking stuff that may be of interest to the Wombatcast community: here’s a few things…

Introverts unite!

I’ll bet that a large number of geeks (of the comic-book loving, gaming variety) are introverted, and I’d be very interested to hear if the WC community agrees or disagrees.  For me, losing myself in books for hours and hours as a kid led in a direct line to me losing myself for hours and hours playing Civilization or Nintendo (and then Playstation, and even later Civilization 5) as I got older.  I figured I was just an anti-social weirdo (and I probably was) but there was more to it – I was part of a group of people that may make up 25-33% of the population but who are constantly battered by their extroverted peers to stop being a “weirdo” and be more “outgoing”.  It’s great to see people standing up for the introverted mindset these days – I certainly wish I’d know more of this stuff that follows when I was younger; it would of helped me make more sense out of who I was/am.

Teh Sexy

Geeky guys have a reputation for not being savvy around the ladies and therefore compensating by lusting after pneumatic comic-book heroines.  I’d always sort of figured this was an unfair caricature of geeky guys, but this tumblr page catalogues all the contorting ways it may be true…

…and speaking of sexy – this article shows what happens when someone who has read too much literary criticism plays Skyrim (the author was an assistant producer for Donnie Darko so he gets a pass for name-dropping Roland Barthes and Leopold Bloom in a video game review).  I actually think the author makes a pretty neat point so if you can get past his pseudo-academic style I think the article is worth five minutes of your time.  I’d quibble with his conclusions slightly because he clearly doesn’t know about Japanese “rape games” (and I won’t provide a link here because I wish I didn’t know about them either even if I’ve never played one)  If there was ever something that demonstrated some geeky guys have serious woman-issues it’s that genre of video games.

But, if faux-literary criticism isn’t your thing, just go watch Donnie Darko instead.  What else are you doing this weekend anyway?

WombatChats

I pour my heart and soul and love into WombatChats, so I just wanted to say I forgive you Andy for stealing my bit as soon as I left town.

Which kind of segues into today’s episode. It involves two men and an unspoken love that only cowboys in a Wyoming pasturage herding sheep can understand. On those Brokeback Hills the nights are cold and stormy. The desolation that darkness brings surrounds us, and only our man bond can see us through until morning.

2012 Movies to See or Miss

Justin on Mic

Justin on Mic

As per requested (I asked the listeners for something to write about) here is my list of must see movies in 2012:

  • The Hunger Games – Never read the books, but this looks like it has some promise.  I love the premise of it as well.
  • The Avengers – Duh
  • Prometheus – Name a bad Ridley Scott movie
  • Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – If this is wrong I don’t want to be right.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man
  • The Dark Knight Rises – I haven’t been so excited for a Batman tale since I was a regular reader of the comics.
  • The Bourne Legacy - Jeremy Renner taking over as the star…This will be good.
  • The Expendables 2 – Gun porn…Bullet Bukkake
  • James Bond: Skyfall – Daniel Craig is the greatest Bond ever!
  • World War Z – How cool or how bad did they screw it up?
  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Must miss movies of 2012:

  • John Carter – This movie screams, “I WAS MADE BY SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T CARE ABOUT THE SOURCE MATERIAL!”
  • The Three Stooges – I watched the trailer and it turned me white.
  • Battleship – I just threw up in my mouth.
  • Step Up 4 – If I find any of you at this movie…you will be grounded.
  • Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – I know this one is just for the kids but the first one was so good.  The second one I forgot one minute after the credits rolled.
  • The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 – This is like saying, “Don’t consume razor blades.”

The could go either way list of 2012:

  • 21 Jump Street – Looks funny…but…
  • Wrath of the Titans – Didn’t see the Clash remake
  • Men in Black III – Just wouldn’t bet on this one.
  • Snow White and the Huntsman – Kristen Stuart is in it = Sad…Charlize Theron is in it = Bonus
  • Rock of Ages – A musical, but featuring great music.
  • GI Joe: Retaliation – Minus a Waynes brother gives this one hope.  Plus the Rock and Bruce Willis makes it even more promising.
  • Total Recall – Great material for a remake.
  • Dredd – Can they stay away from the mistakes of the Sylvester Stalone movie?
  • Red Dawn – What can they do with this?

I am sure there are more but this is the quick list.  Discuss!

Justin
